Networking 101
Networking is a theme that comes up countless times during our careers, but why?

- Industry knowledge and exchange of information with professionals
- Opportunities for constructive feedback
- Leadership tips and ideas
- Increased motivation for performance
- Partnership opportunities
- Mentorship
- Enhanced Company Culture
But how do we network? What are the best networking practices and ways to gain a professional network that will grow and flourish, resulting in lasting, meaningful connections? Here are some ideas on how to establish then grow your networking skills:
- Establish Goals. Ask yourself, “In what areas do I need help or want to gain more knowledge?”.
- Start Laterally. A great place to start is by seeking out individuals who are lateral connections. These professionals can be peers within or outside of your organization who are working on projects that interest you, have specialties in areas you do not, or understand a process you want to learn more about. These connections can help shape performance and enhance opportunities.
- Grow Connections at All Levels. The ways to do this can be as simple as introducing yourself and requesting feedback, reviewing recent projects, or asking questions about business priorities. When reaching out, bring focus to your value, spotlight ways you excel, and be willing to share what you know.
- Making External Connections Digitally. When making external connections in the digital world, make sure to be clear and concise. Sending a message on LinkedIn to others in your industry is a great way to network. But, when messaging, state your reasons for connecting and ask for a time to talk more, if appropriate.
- Attend and Participate in Networking Events. Be social! Attend any available networking events in the c-store space and talk with people! These networking events are presented specifically for people to make connections, a goal everyone is trying to obtain. Be prepared with an updated business card, an introduction, and questions. Then, follow up with an email thanking them for their time and expressing how nice it was to connect.
- Focus on Meaningful Conversation. When at an event, it is more impactful to share several meaningful conversations than a large amount of quick conversations. You are more likely to make a lasting impression if you are engaging in valuable conversation by finding shared interests and goals.
- Stay Connected and Revisit Old Connections. Once your network has gained connections, be sure to stay connected as well as check in with older connections. Sending a check-in email, asking a question, or making a lunch meeting are good ways to stay connected to those in your network.
- Maintain a Two-Sided Connection. Networking is like any relationship—there are two sides. Be sure to help those in your network the same ways they are helping you. Offer advice, insights, and encourage questions that lead to rich discussion.
